Nevada Air Race Crash : plane crashed at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada USA and  eight people died and 54 were injured

The pilot of a vintage fighter plane that ploughed into an airshow crowd has been hailed a hero after it emerged he was able to steer his doomed aircraft away from a grandstand - avoiding even worse casualties.

Jimmy Leeward, 74, and eight people died and 54 were injured when his rebuilt 1940s-era aircraft P51 Mustang crashed at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada.
Onlookers said the pilot appeared to steer his plane away from a packed grandstand seconds before it hit the ground. It is thought that Mr Leeward, whose family were watching, suffered a mechanical failure in the air.

Horrific: The vintage plane crashes into the edge of the grandstand killing three people, including the veteran pilot and injuring more than 50 spectators
Onlookers reported seeing a section of the tail fall off Mr Leeward's plane before the crash.

One of them, Jon Wehan, wrote on Mr Leeward’s Facebook profile page: 'Jimmy, you saved my life. You pulled up just enough to miss us by 50ft.'
Johnny Norman said the pilot might have saved 'thousands of lives'. Witness Ben Cissell told CNN the plane crashed about 100ft from him.
